What is a Bindi?

Also known as Tilakam, Pottu, Tika, or Wedding Tilak (third eye or spiritual eye) these temporary crystal tattoo are worn primarily on the forehead traditionally by Hindu women to signify marriage, or as a fashion statement. The theory behind the crystals is it protects the women from the evil eye of others; a religious tradition today mostly abandoned in the west and more likely worn as a fashion statement.

Bindis come in many shapes: round dots, a powerful frozen flame and other striking shapes.  The colors range throughout the rainbow, mostly with reds and maroons included.  Where these are placed has significance. Between the eyebrows is the center of wisdom, know as “Agna” or part of the charka, for command.  Concentration through meditation is controlled from this area.

The red colors are said to represent the ancient sacrifices to the Gods.  Gifts replaced eventually and thankfully, living sacrifices.  Red also embodies LOVE.  Yellow, for example, influences intellect.

Outside the historical region of Hinduism, and those outside the religion, women of the west wear these crystal tattoos as a statement of style.  These and henna tattoos have been worn and photographed by the likes of superstars Madonna, Gwen Stefani (Pop Group - No Doubt), Shakira and Shania Twain (Country Recording star).  

Other Types of Bindi

Other types include Armlets, Belly Bindis, Bridal Forehead, Eye Jewels, Eyebrow Jewels, Mang Tika and Nose Bindi.  All of these have significance to where it they are worn in the body and by whom (married or single). How to Apply

1. Carefully remove your new bindi from the package.  They are glued to the plastic.  This also means you can reuse your bindi.  Using your fingernail or tweezers, loosen it completely.  Just be careful using tweezers as not to damage the crystals or colors of the tattoo.

2. Placing the bindi on the breast, navel or else where is easy and there is no one correct way when wearing for fashion.  You can reapply several times so taking it off and moving it is easy.  Like anything fragile, just be careful.  It will look great wherever you place it.  MAKE SURE YOU APPLY THE BINDI TO A CLEAN, DRY AREA OF THE SKIN.

3. Storing the bindi once you have used it is also a cinch. If you choose to keep it for later use, carefully remove it and place it back on the original piece of plastic.  Mixing and match bindis are also fun and guys love to see that.  If the sticky wears off, clean the back of the crystal tattoos with alcohol.  Before the next use, apply a little eyelash glue or non toxic glue (do you use latex glue of you are allergic to latex) to the back and re-stick to where on your body you want to reapply.

4.
